Breaking down on I-66 is stressful and dangerous. Here is how to stay safe and get help fast.
Stay Safe First, It's a Highway
I-66 moves fast and gets congested, which makes a breakdown genuinely dangerous. Your safety matters more than the car. Follow these steps:
- Signal and get as far onto the right shoulder (or an exit ramp) as you safely can
- Turn on your hazard lights immediately
- If it's safe, everyone should exit on the side away from traffic and stand behind the guardrail, not next to the car
- If it's not safe to exit, stay buckled inside with hazards on and call for help
- Don't attempt repairs in a live traffic lane
Where to Note Your Location
Tell the operator your direction of travel (east or west), the nearest exit number or mile marker, and any landmark. On I-66 that might be the exit 43 (Route 29) interchange, exit 40 (Haymarket/Route 15), or the Prince William Parkway. The more specific you are, the faster we reach you.
