Whether your insurance covers a tow in Virginia depends on your policy. Here is how to find out and what to expect.
It Depends on Your Coverage
Standard liability insurance does not usually pay for a routine tow. Whether yours is covered comes down to the specific add-ons and situations below. The good news: a lot of drivers have towing coverage they forgot they bought, or through a card or membership they already carry.
When Towing Is Covered
- Roadside assistance or towing/labor coverage on your auto policy (an inexpensive add-on many drivers have)
- After a covered accident, the tow is often part of your collision claim
- Comprehensive claims (theft, flood, animal strike) often include the tow
- Manufacturer roadside programs on newer vehicles still under warranty
- Credit-card roadside benefits on some cards
- AAA or a standalone roadside membership
How to Check and File
Look for "towing and labor" or "roadside assistance" on your declarations page, or call your agent. If the tow follows an accident, it usually goes on the claim. Either way, keep your itemized receipt, that's what gets you reimbursed. See also who pays for towing after an accident.
